Suicide prevention among military personnel: current challenges and solutions

A round-table discussion on «Suicide prevention in the armed forces» was held at the Law Enforcement Academy under the General Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The event was attended by representatives of the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Chief Military Prosecutor’s Office, the Ministry of Defence, other military units, the Ministry of Health and the National Defence University of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The round table was held as part of an inter-agency study focusing on the prevention of offences and suicidal behaviour among military personnel.

Participants discussed the causes and circumstances of suicides in the military, the effectiveness of existing preventive measures, issues relating to psychological support for military personnel, and the practice of prosecutorial oversight. Particular attention was paid to improving inter-agency cooperation, developing a system for the early identification of suicide risks, and introducing modern approaches to preventative work.

Following the meeting, proposals were drawn up aimed at improving the effectiveness of suicide prevention, strengthening the rule of law, and ensuring the safety of military service.
