Academy and Experts: How to Criminalize Influence Peddling

On July 31, 2025, a round table discussion was held at the Academy of Law Enforcement Agencies under the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The event focused on inter-agency research on the topic: “Criminalizing Influence Peddling (Active and Passive Forms): International Experience and Implementation in National Legislation.”

The discussion included representatives from the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Anti-Corruption Service, and international experts and scholars. They discussed modern approaches to the criminal legal regulation of influence peddling, taking into account international practices and proposals from the academic community.

The attendees supported the research team’s initiatives to:

  • Legally codify influence peddling as a separate criminal offense.
  • Expand the scope of individuals subject to anti-corruption laws, potentially including private individuals.
  • Clarify legal norms governing liability in this area.

Based on the results of the round table, recommendations were developed to improve legislation and increase the effectiveness of the fight against corruption in Kazakhstan.
