Kazakh doctoral student wins international competition in Moscow on counterterrorism

On June 6, 2025, a solemn ceremony was held in the capital of the Russian Federation to award the winners and laureates of the 5th International Competition of Student Initiatives in the Field of Countering the Ideology of Terrorism, “Student Shield – 2025.” The competition, timed to coincide with the 95th anniversary of Moscow State Linguistic University, was held with the assistance of the Anti-Terrorism Center of the CIS Member States.

The event brought together 229 students and young researchers from 22 universities in eight countries: Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. The competition featured 146 original initiatives aimed at preventing extremism and combating terrorist ideology.

Kazakhstan was well represented by Aslan Askarov, a doctoral student at the Academy of Law Enforcement Agencies under the General Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Kazakhstan, who took first place in the “Best Video” category with his original work “Invisible Poison.” The project was led by Nurmagambetov Burkut, head of the Academy’s Department of Social Sciences and Humanities.

The video “Invisible Poison” was created based on the author’s original script and is dedicated to the topic of hidden radicalization of young people in the digital space. Through metaphors, artistic images, and dynamic visuals, it shows how harmless communication on the internet can lead to tragic consequences. The work was distinguished by its high artistic level, emotional impact, and social significance.

The project was implemented with the assistance of the Center for the Study of Religions LLP, which provided comprehensive support in organizing the filming process. The actors in the video were master’s students of the Academy, thus emphasizing the unity of scientific, creative, and educational approaches in countering the ideology of violence.

Winning this prestigious competition was a recognition of the professional and creative level of the Kazakhstani participant and a testament to the Academy’s high scientific and educational potential. The project also contributes to the development of legal culture, anti-terrorism education, and international cooperation in the field of security.
